NAT TURNER: A TROUBLESOME PROPERTY SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2:00PM / LOS FELIZ 3
Dir.: CHARLES BURNETT, 2003, VIDEO, USA, 57:00
Filmmaker Charles Burnett tackles one of the most controversial figures in American history – the African-American slave Nat Turner, who led a bloody rebellion in 1831. For Burnett, the question is not whether history is right or wrong about Turner, but rather which of the various interpretations of history is to believed. For some, Turner was a hero of an oppressed nation; for others, nothing more than a ruthless killer who spared neither women nor children. To emphasize the fictive component of historical reconstruction, the film adopts an innovative structure: interspersing documentary footage and interviews with dramatizations of different versions of the story, using a new actor to represent Nat Turner in each version.
