Poltergeist - Cast Reunion (on Friday the 13th )
Friday, Sept. 13, 9:30 pm, Vista Theatre

Tode Hooper's 1982 classic horror film about suburbia run amuck, with a script by Steven Spielberg, will be presented in a special screening on - when else? - Friday the 13th. Prior to the screening, joining Silver Lake's own Zelda Rubinstein, who played the scene-stealing diminuitive psychic, and other original cast members as they immortalize their handprints in front of the historical Vista. Post-screening, join the cast for a Q&A.


Encompass
Saturday, Sept. 14, 6 pm, Location To Be Announced

SLFF, Green Galactic and Conduit Artists present Encompass - a night of cutting edge electronic music, film, live performance and turntable wizardry. The evening includes DJ Santo, followed by the U.S. Premier of HORA 2000, a documentary on the Israeli trance scene and a screening of the little-seen Disco Donnie documentary RISE. Following the screenings, party into the night with internationally known DJs in a downtown loft with live performances by electronic artists: TV Sheriff, Animal and Vello in the theater, plus video installations and a basement of surprises. Ticket price includes free cocktail, energy drink and bottled water.

    Howard M. Gluss, Ph.d

    Attention all writers and cinephiles: Silver Lake shrink Dr. Gluss has written an in-depth guide for creating authentically flawed characters in stories. The author will present a video lecture to illustrate some of moviedom's most famous archetypes.


    The Screenplay Competition & Staged Reading (Free Event)

    Winning script of the annual Silver Lake Film Festival Screenplay Contest will be announced, followed by a staged reading of the Grand Prize winner. As in past years, expect special guest stars to appear among the cast at the showcase held at the American Film Institute.


    8th Annual "Music Box" Steps (Free Event)
    Sunday, Sept. 15, noon to 3 pm, Laurel & Hardy Park in Silver Lake

    This family event celebrates Silver Lake's cinematic legacy by commemorating the location of Laurel & Hardy's 1932 Oscar-winning short, "The Music Box." The film is screened at the site where the comedic duo attempted to hoist a piano to the top of a steep outdoor staircase. A free event with refreshments provided. Sponsored by the Silver Lake Improvement Association.


    L.A. Punk Revisited: Along Chung King Road
    Sunday, Sept. 15, 3 pm - 10 pm, Chinatown

    What goes around comes around. . .at least where L.A.'s punk scene is concerned. Madame Wong's is no more, but this program celebrates the renascent music, art and fashion scene centered on Chinatown's Chung King Road. More than a mere event, this is a daylong happening: film screenings, book signings, art exhibitions, and performances by The Fuse, Midget Hand Job, The Hangmen.

    Without having yet released their first LP, The Fuse already are one of the most notorious Los Angeles bands of the 21st Century - loved and hated equally in growing numbers. ÒThe Fuse" is a brief 24-minute look into the band - their music, image and goals.

    Three years in the making, the filmmakers followed punk graphic artist Raymond Pettibon from Vienna to Los Angeles to capture why bands like Black Flag, Minutemen and Sonic Youth demand nothing less.

    Winnifred Eaton, the first Asian American novelist and screenwriter, wrote hundreds of screenplays and treatments from 1924 to 1931. Eaton's granddaughter, Diana Birchall, will read from this fascinating woman's personal and published writings and from her own biography of Eaton.


    Cinema Prozac: Life And High Times Of Drugs In Film

    ACTS OF WORSHIP
    Drugs have been used both medicinally and recreationally since the earliest days of recorded history. Undeniably, great works of art and literature have been created under the influence of drugs. The classifi-cation of some drugs as Òillegal" coincided with the rise of the film medium, and filmmakers as early as 1895 were addressing the topic in their movies. This series explores the depiction, and frequent demonization, of drugs in cinema through the screenings of new and old films and a panel discussion that promises lively debate. Curated by Ziggy Mrkich.

    Following the screening of SUBJECT NARCOTICS, a panel of speakers, including director Terry Sanders, Charles S. Grob, M.D., Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine/editor of Hallucinogens: A Reader and journalist Paul Cullum, whose article in the L.A. Weekly inspired the series, will discuss the fluid social mores that have influenced how drugs have been depicted in the movies.

    U.S prison policies violate international human rights standards, reward corporations for warehousing people and force taxpayers into spending for penitentiaries that decades of studies have shown do not impact crime. In this series, filmmakers how the development of the prison industrial complex has led to the valuing of profits over people, punishment over rehabilitation.     NATIVE WISDOM
    Native Americans have been portrayed in cinema through the eyes and ideology of the white world, both on screen and behind the camera. With this year's success of films by Native-American filmmakers such as The Fast Runner, Skins and The Business of Fancy Dancing, the stereotype has finally been broken. This series continues the exploration of the contemporary world of Native Americans. Special guest performances precede all three screenings. Curated by Julianna Brannum.
