Life/Drawing
Dir: Dan Bootzin, 2000, USA, 35mm, 85 min. (Los Angeles Premiere)
At the center of Dan Bootzin's handsome and humorous portrait of a down-on-his-luck artist stumbling toward self-discovery is the winning performance of Mark Ruffalo as a young man torn between the artificialities of the art world and the simple love that could bring the personal salvation he so desperately needs. Standout cinematography by Denise Brassard captures the colorful beauty of life and the dark corners of a character whose life is slowly slipping away. WITH SHORT: ELEVATOR WORLD Dir: Mitchell Rose, 1999, USA, 35mm, 4 min. about the ups and downs, the ins and outs -- and the psychology of man.

Phantom Pain
Dir: Neil Matsumoto, 1997, USA, 16mm, 84 min.
A mesmerizing slice-of-life study of a transexual looking for love in all the wrong places. To be sure, the film's central character Christy Nichols meets with her share of hard to watch tragic events (her confused Johns inevitably turn on her whether she begs them to love her or leave her alone), but it is the searing and gentle emotion engendered through the startling superstar-like debut of lead actor Tina Alexis that shines through the loudest. WITH SHORT: CREAM PUFF Dir: Jared Seide, 1999, USA, 35mm, 26 min, a poignant character piece about a man, broken in body and spirit, and his stoic caretaker.

Perennial teen P.J. Soles leads the student body in a riotous revolt fueled by the hard-driving music of The Ramones.

Ruins
Dir: Jesse Lerner, 1999, USA, 16mm, 78 min.
Employing film techniques from ethnography to the newsreel, Lerner’s film, as with the site of a ruin, is composed of fragments that must be pieced together and assessed to make new meanings. This fast-paced mock-umentary explores artifice and truth in the production of national heritage.
WITH SHORT: THE MEXECUTIONER Dir: Esteban Zul, 27 min.

Friday, September 15, 9:30 pm Los Feliz Cinema 3 TRT: 93.5 min.
The Specials
Dir: Craig Mazin, 2000, USA, 35mm, 90 min. (Co-Presented by Regent Entertainment)
Rob Lowe and Thomas Haden Church star in a savory send up of super heroes with their headquarters located in, of all places, Silver Lake!! The Specials are old hands at fighting evil. Far more insidious are the forces that threaten their caped camaraderie: action toy spin-offs and media residuals, inter-hero adultery, and corporations perks and health plans.
