Become a part of film history as a player in the Opening Night festivities of the first annual Silver Lake Film Festival. Lights, cameras, celebrities — this is where the action happens. Avant garde filmmaker, author and provocateur Kenneth Anger will be present to accept his Spirit of Silver Lake Award. The winner of the festival Silver Screen Screenwriting Contest will be announced. Then it’s on to the world premiere screening of Lucas Reiner’s The Gold Cup, shot here in Silver Lake.
The night goes into overdrive as the scene heads to the Opening Night party extravaganza at the historic Mack Sennett soundstage down the block. Mingle among the filmmakers and fellow hipsters as you sip cocktails and sample delectables from the dinner buffet. Groovy music will keep things shakin’.

THE GOLD CUP
(at the Vista Theater)
(Dir: Lucas Reiner, 2000, USA, 35 mm, 87 min.)
The Gold Cup begins with the ubiquitous signage of Los Angeles in faltering neon and nearly polished brass. As Clayton (Wood Harris) drives through the city in slow motion, his real home – a 24-hour cafe in Silver Lake called the Gold Cup – swirls with action. Love, death and the undoing of the number zero all take place within the confines of this establishment. Director Reiner, also a visual artist, finds new beauty in the everyday — the framing of a glazed doughnut, the rim of a coffee cup, a kind gesture. Featuring several local haunts and sights, this is quintessential Silver Lake at its best.

Let us be bold: Kenneth Anger is the godfather of independent avant-garde cinema. He is the original pioneer, the first to go out on a limb for his personal vision. A Tinseltown original from the beginning, as a boy he played an Indian Prince in Midsummer Nights' Dream and is the author of seminal books Hollywood Babylon 1 & 2. Tonight, we celebrate this living legend and screen his first film, Fireworks. Anger will appear in person to immortalize his foot- and hand-prints in cement in front of the historic Vista Theater. Later in the festival, take time to see a program of his masterworks and the US Premiere of his new video, Don’t Smoke That Cigarette.
