The first Silver Lake Film
Festival launches what will be an annual four-day film festival
comprised of features and short films by filmmakers from Silver
Lake, greater Los Angeles, and around the world. The selection of
film programming emphasizes the cultural and creative diversity
of Silver Lake and its neighboring communities.
The
Silver Lake Film Festival proudly embraces the work of alternative
filmmakers. Indeed, non-mainstream and experimental film and video
-- features, shorts and documentaries -- will be the festival' s
focus. A programming goal is to provide access to films that would
not necessarily be available to the public.
A
complementary goal is to select films that can serve as platform
for the celebration of other arts. For example, a documentary series
with a theme about a specific type of music might also be accompanied
with a live performance, a lecture and a photo exhibition. In this
sense, the Silver Lake Film Festival is a multi-arts festival with
cinema serving as the catalyst.
A third programming goal is to emphasize the work of filmmakers
from the greater Silver Lake area,
The Festival shall serve as a forum where local-area filmmakers
can meet and engage one another while exposing local filmgoers to
their work.
Beyond
programming, another key feature of the festival is the utilization
of historic theaters located in the community for screenings, including
the historic Vista theater and other venues.
Ancillary events such as lectures and readings, musical performances,
art exhibitions and receptions will be held in the cafes, galleries
and bookstores that are an integral part the great Silver Lake cultural
milieu.

A
California non-profit, public benefit corporation, the Silver Lake
Film Festival was created in 1999 to celebrate through cinema the
cultural diversity and avant-garde creativity that historically
has characterized the Silver Lake community of Los Angeles. As the
only non-institutional film festival in Los Angeles County east
of Hollywood, the Silver Lake Film Festival serves as a conduit
for bringing together the film community -- filmmakers and fans
alike -- in a wide geographic and demographic area stretching from
East Los Angeles and downtown L.A. to Hollywood.
