The
scene is 1926. Antonio Moreno, the Latin-lover silver screen idol,
is at the height of his career. His wife, oil heiress Daisy Canfield,
is throwing a lavish party on his behalf at their Mediterranean-styled
estate atop the hills of Silver Lake. The occasion: The premiere of
Morenos classic melodrama, The Temptress, co-starring a Swedish
ingenue re-named Greta Garbo. The sun is just beginning a slow descent
behind the Hollywood hills as the party-goers arrive in their Pierce-Arrows,
Dusenbergs and Packards.
You
can be there, too, during the Closing Night festivities of the first
annual Silver Lake Film Festival. Shuttle buses will carry you from
the KCET studios to the Canfield-Moreno mansion, now known as The
Paramour, where you will be greeted with cocktails and ushered to
your seat on the lawn of the estate. Actress and author, Mary Woronov
will be present to accept her Spirit of Silver Lake award. Then sit
back for a rare screening under the stars of The Temptress. Drinks,
a dessert buffet and entertainment follow in the mansions dramatic
ballroom.
Please
Note: There is no parking at the estate. All ticket-holders
must park at KCET and board a shuttle bus from 6pm-7 pm.
The
Temptress
(at the Paramour)
(Dir.
Vicente Blasco Ibanez, 1926, USA, 35mm-Silent, 80 min.)
The
exotic locales of Argentina and Paris. A devastating flood. Torrid
romance. Dueling rivals. Fallen fortunes. The Temptress had
it all when it premiered in 1926. The story of a woman who made
a career of toying with mens hearts only to be done in by
true love resonated with audiences everywhere. The press took special
note of its leading actors, Greta Garbo and Antonio Moreno. Heres
what Photoplay magazine in 1926 wrote: "Miss Garbo scored in The
Torrent but it takes The Temptress to prove definitively
her abilities
She is beautiful, she flashes and scintillates
with a singular appeal." Pictureplay wrote: "The Temptress
is exciting, colorful, and if you like refined vampires,
Greta Garbo will give you one you wont forget. Antonio Moreno
is her equal in every scene."
LIVE ACCOMPANIMENT!

What independent/cult
film is complete without Mary Woronov? From her early days as a
"superstar" in the Andy Warhol factory films (Chelsea Girls)
to her latest star turn (upcoming in The New Women directed by Todd
Hughes), Woronov has left her inimitable mark on over 70 movies
in her 35-odd year career. She helped launch the careers of, among
others, Oliver Stone (Seizure) and Paul Bartel (Deathrace
2000, Eating Raoul) and has worked with directors from
Warren Beatty to Gregg Araki. An accomplished painter and author
of three books, Woronov is a maverick, a renaissance woman who embodies
the spirit of Silver Lake. As part of the Closing Night program,
Woronov will appear along with a special presentation and a sneak
preview of The New Women trailer. Earlier in the festival,
don't miss the late-night screening of Rock 'n' Roll High School
where Woronov will immortalize her foot and handprints at the Vista.
